A COMMUNITY OF ENTREPRENEURS

If there is anything these tough economic times have taught us, it is that our traditional models of thinking about job creation and stability will not serve us in this ever-changing global economy. Well-paying white-collar jobs that were once thought to be reliable have been as vulnerable to downsizing and elimination in recent years as a manufacturing job shipped overseas. The unemployment rate in Louisville continues to hover around 10% and is much higher in our African-American and Hispanic communities.
We need to go on the offensive to put people back to work and create an environment where individuals, families and the city as a whole can sustain ourselves and thrive in any economic climate.
As Mayor, I will establish a culture of entrepreneurship in our city that celebrates our uniqueness and encourages collaborative, creative partnerships among businesses to form a self-sustaining local economy.
Locally, we can help existing local businesses in their growth and expansion by providing tax credits to companies for hiring new employees, purchasing new equipment and supporting other workforce-building efforts. In addition, we can create new entrepreneurs among skilled unemployed and underemployed workers by helping them start businesses right where they live, breaking the cycles of poverty and unemployment in certain neighborhoods, rebuilding communities, and attracting new investment to these areas.
Nationally, we can promote Louisville as a place where a treasured quality of life and abundant cultural amenities provide the perfect complement to an entrepreneurial lifestyle, attracting new professionals and budding businesses to grow our economy.
